Save money and reduce your environmental footprint with an optimum water flow rate
Having an ideal water flow rate in your home is key to effective plumbing. Water flow rate is the measurement of water that is flowing from your taps and showerhead. Lowering your flow rate won’t impact on the performance of your tapware but could save you money by decreasing your hot water bill. By using less water, you also reduce your impact on the environment.
It’s easy to measure your flow rate with the “bucket test”. All you need is a bucket and a stopwatch. Then, follow these simple steps:
- Place the bucket under your shower or tap
- Turn on the water, start your stopwatch and let the water flow at a normal rate for 15 seconds
- Multiply the amount of water used by four to get your flow rate per minute
You are probably using too much water if your flow rate in your shower is more than nine litres per minute or six litres per minute from your taps.
BC Plumbers can advise you on the best plumbing systems to reduce your water flow rate and install them throughout your home. These may include flow restrictors, aerators, pressure-limiting valves or water-efficient tap and showerhead fittings.
Which hot water system is the best for you? A cylinder or continuous flow system?
Choosing the right hot water system for your home can be difficult. You’ll need to decide between a hot water cylinder or continuous flow system, and the heating method – either electric, gas or heat pump. If you choose the wrong system, you risk continually running out of hot water or spending more money on hot water than you need to be.
Mains pressure electric hot water storage cylinder systems (upright cylinders) deliver full water flows to multiple wet areas in your home and will put an end to unstable shower temperatures. Teenagers in the house? A continuous flow system will ensure you never run out of water.
